WPhA Endorses the Wyoming Program for Quitting Chewing

The Wyoming Program for Quitting Chewing-a successful graduated nicotine replacement regimen for snuff users, was sanctioned at the summer convention. The program was presented by Dan Schreiner a pharmacist and store owner in Glenrock. The program has been extremely successful for several years and is designed for the pharmacist, dentist, or dental hygienist to use in helping their patients to kick the tobacco chewing habit. The brochure acknowledges the difficulties faced when attempting to quit chewing and addresses the four main factors needed to kick the spit tobacco habit-desire, tapered nicotine levels, taste of replacement products, and mimicking the physical habits of chewing.

In addition to providing a non-tobacco replacement product Bacc-Off, a mixing pad, and labels, the kit brochure outlines in detail suggested mixing ratios and quitting timetables for an easy transition to a nicotine free life within 6 to 9 weeks. The state tobacco quitting programs will be running ads plugging the successes of the graduated nicotine replacement programs and are printing a new pamphlet on quitting spit tobacco. One of the testimonials is a "graduate" of the Wyoming Program for Quitting Chewing. She is 40 and had chewed heavily for 31 years before starting the program in January. She quit within the 6 weeks timetable and it "was no big deal."

The success of this inexpensive program seems to hinge on a local professional recommendation and the availability of the product Bacc-Off with the initial packet, along with an investment by the quitter. The packets will be distributed in packs of 5 to pharmacies for $3 each and two cans of Bacc-Off are to be supplied by the pharmacy in the packet retailing for $10. Kits to dental offices will contain 2 cans of the product and additional Bacc-Off can be obtained from the local pharmacy. The WPhA will receive at least $1.50 from each kit sold to pharmacies and a sign for the program will be attached. Ideally if pharmacists could market the program to the dentists they know it should be most successful that way.

Direct order information for Bacc-Off is available from www.dipstop.com, with the 4 dozen price being shipped prepaid at $1.60 a can. Deer Creek Drug, Box 940, Glenrock, 82637 (or fax 307-436- 8933) will ship any amount of assorted product to you at that price plus postage. A box of 12 cans comes in a self merchandising display with the straight ("like" Copenhagen flavor) selling 3 to 1 over the "like Skoal" flavor.
